How Many Chemicals Do We Put on Our Skin Every Single Day?

(Spoiler: Probably More Than on your Dinner Plate)

So how many products might you actually use every single day before you've even had your morning coffee and leopard crawled you way to the office?
How about:
Toothpaste
Shampoo
Conditioner
Face wash
Toner
Serum
Moisturiser
Sunscreen
Deodorant
Perfume
Makeup
Hair styling products
Hand sanitiser
Hand cream
By wine-o-clock you’ve probably topped up sunscreen, retouched your lippy, washed your hands ten times, reapplied moisturiser, used lip balm, removed makeup and perhaps indulged in a luxurious night cream.
Your skin has been busier than your socials!
So…..go on give it a go - how many individual chemicals are actually in that pharmacy's worth of goop, we put on our skin in one day??
20? 30? 50?
Here’s an interesting prompt - the average adult probably has somewhere between 6 and 15 personal care products that they apply each day. Women often use considerably more, while many men are catching up thanks to beard oils, skincare routines and hair products.
Now these products can contain anything from 15 to 50 ingredients...each.
Do the maths (joking, we already did).
That means your skin could encounter between 100 to 500+ different chemicals every day.
Now before you throw everything in the bathroom bin…
Remember this...
Everything Is a Chemical (Yes, even Water)
The word chemical has developed a terrible reputation.
It tends to conjure images of scientists in hazmat suits pouring mysterious glowing liquids into barrels labelled “Definitely Not Good.”
Reality is rather less dramatic.
Water is a chemical.
Olive oil is made of chemicals.
Lavender essential oil? A wonderfully complex cocktail of naturally occurring chemicals.
Even your morning cup of tea is packed with thousands of naturally occurring chemical compounds.
So “chemical” isn’t automatically a bad word.
The more useful question is:
What chemicals are we using, and do they make sense for our skin?
Your Skin Isn’t a Sponge… But It Isn’t a Brick Wall Either
You’ve probably heard someone confidently announce:
“Your skin absorbs everything!”
Not quite.
Equally inaccurate is the claim that nothing gets through.
The truth sits comfortably in the middle.
Your skin is remarkably clever. Its outer layer—the skin barrier—is designed to keep most unwanted things out while reducing water loss from within.
Some ingredients stay mostly on the surface.
Some penetrate the upper layers.
A few are specifically designed to travel deeper.
Absorption depends on things like:
Molecule size
Solubility
Concentration
Time left on the skin
The condition of your skin barrier
The formulation itself
It’s less like a sponge and more like an exceptionally picky nightclub bouncer.
“Sorry mate. You’re not on the list.”

The Cocktail Effect
One product isn’t usually the concern.
It’s the accumulation.
We rarely use just one lotion or one cream.
Instead, we layer products all day long.
Cleanser.
Serum.
Moisturiser.
SPF.
Foundation.
Powder.
Setting spray.
Perfume.
Hair products.
Body lotion.
Repeat tomorrow.
Scientists continue to study what’s sometimes called the “cocktail effect”—how repeated exposure to multiple ingredients may interact over time. While many cosmetic ingredients have been assessed individually for safety, researchers are still exploring how combinations and long-term cumulative exposure might influence health. This is an active area of research, and many questions remain. That uncertainty is one reason some people prefer to simplify their routines where possible.
More Isn’t Always Better
Modern skincare has convinced us we need:
A cleanser.
Then another cleanser.
An exfoliating acid.
A brightening serum.
A hydrating serum.
A peptide serum.
A moisturiser.
A facial oil.
A sleeping mask.
An overnight treatment.
A skin booster.
An essence.
A mist.
A primer.
By the time you’ve finished, your skin needs a lie down.
Sometimes fewer, well-chosen products are all your skin really needs.
Read the Ingredients, Not Just the Marketing
Words like:
Natural
Organic
Clean
Green
Botanical
…look lovely on a label.
Unfortunately, they don’t tell you very much.
Instead, turn the bottle around.
The ingredient list tells the real story.
Look for products with thoughtfully selected ingredients that serve a purpose rather than simply creating a longer label.
At KKOL we say - Less Fuss - More Function.
We believe skincare should work with your skin, not overwhelm it.
That means carefully choosing high-quality oils, botanical extracts and active ingredients because they earn their place in the bottle—not because they’re fashionable this month.
We’re not afraid of science.
We’re not afraid of nature either.
The best formulations often combine both.
Our goal isn’t to make you own twenty products.
It’s to make the products that you do use - genuinely worthwhile.
The Bottom Line
You don’t need to fear every ingredient with a long name.
Nor do you need to believe every marketing buzzword.
Your skin meets hundreds of ingredients over the course of a normal week, so it’s worth paying attention to what you choose to put on it.
Ask questions.
Read labels.
Choose products because they make sense—not because someone on social media told you they were “toxin-free.”
After all, your skin is with you for life. It keeps your insides in ...and the outsides out.
It deserves products chosen with a little thought… and perhaps a little less hype.
So next time some asks you how many chemicals you put on your skin - Wouldn't it be nice to say: "Actually not as many as you would think"
